last week went to watch “Surrogates”, was pretty alright. sort of attempt to make an intelligent sci-fi movie. yet too predictable in plot, action dosed and hollywoodish in many ways. but i loved the side details. it’s a pure philip-dickian story, i’d say. and as with PKDick often, i tend to love the small details more than the story line. what absolutely caught my mind was the way all surrogates were so perfect looking, like sensibly photoshopped pictures of every person walking around. perfect smooth skin, no pores, dyied thick hair. no visible age signs. a Ken and Barbie world. perfect masks. tiny changes in features – but it made them all look subconsciously so fake. this was the most wonderful touch in the movie. it was really subtle, not too over done (which makes it work). it was executed so well, that in the end of film you actually realize how dear are all those little imperfections of people. how real they make us, how alive, how much more character they add. they are so dear. those little skin flaws, crow’s-feet, baldness, scars, evening stuble, overweight, wrinkles, uneven brows – it’s all so charming. you suddenly start to appreciate it all. these are not the imperfections, these are the part of a complete great masterpiece; it adds accents, dynamics, uniqueness to the whole. it’s beautiful. that what makes art Art instead of kitsch. singularity. this is the biggest and most unique achievement of this film.
it’s beautiful..!
